Text Box: Johnson County is located in southernmost Illinois, between the Ohio and the Mississippi Rivers in the heart of the Shawnee National Forest.  Johnson County is centrally located within the Southernmost Illinois region with Union, Alexander, and Pulaski counties to the west, Pope and Hardin counties to the east and Massac to the south.  In addition, the city of Marion, Illinois is located to the north in bordering Williamson County.  
The county has an area of 344 square miles and a population of 12,878 (2000 Census).  Vienna, the county seat has direct access to Interstate 24 (I-24) with interchanges at mile markers 14 & 16.  Goreville, in the northern part of the county, has an I-24 interchange at mile marker 7 and an Interstate 57 (I-57) interchange at mile marker 40, just south of the junction of I-24 and I-57.  
Johnson County is within 34 miles of Paducah, KY, 47 miles of Cape Girardeau, MO, and 94 miles of Evansville, IN.  The major markets listed below are located within a 500 mile radius of Johnson County (all mileage reported from county seat at Vienna, IL).
