Text Box: The Southernmost Illinois Delta Empowerment Zone (SIDEZ) received federal empowerment zone designation in December 1998.  Located at the southern tip of Illinois between the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers and the Shawnee National Forest, the empowerment zone includes all of Pulaski County and parts of Alexander and Johnson counties.  Census tracts 9577, 9578 and 9579 in Alexander County and census tract 9778 in Johnson County are located within the empowerment zone.  Two interstate highways serve the empowerment zone:  Interstate 57 and Interstate 24.  The following maps demonstrate the SIDEZ designation area and the empowerment zone's convenient location relative to St Louis, MO, Nashville, TN, Memphis, TN, Chicago, IL, Louisville, KY and other major Midwest metropolitan centers.
The area receives federal tax credits and grant funds to carry out a 10-Year Strategic Plan for community and economic development.  The zone is investing grant funds in seven priority goal areas:  Infrastructure, Economic Development, Tourism Development, Stronger Unity/Sense of Community, Education and Life-Long Learning, Housing and Health Care.
While each of the three counties in the empowerment zone has its own unique incentives and available sites, the Federal Incentives, Low Interest Financing and Employment & Training Resources listed are available zone wide.
